The massive demand for Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel is something we haven't seen in a long time. With his debut collection, a "New Chanelmania" was born, and the trajectory of the house changed forever. Blazy was able to do the unthinkable in luxury: taking the kind of timeless, untouchable appeal that defines Chanel and translating it into something entirely his own.
After introducing himself with an incredible debut, we got to witness his second runway in Biarritz. This runway showed off Blazy’s diversity in what he can achieve. He made references to the original 1926 “Ford” dress and also brought back that classic nautical sailor vibe.
It’s honestly refreshing to see someone actually look at the archives and find a way to make them feel modern rather than just dated. This shift toward a more functional, "lived-in" luxury feels like a total pivot from the heavy branding we've seen for years. It sets a perfect tone for the rest of the collection, where the focus moves from historical nods to the way these pieces actually move on a real person.
Before Blazy, Virginie Viard was in charge. Although the market reaction didn't reach the fever pitch we are seeing now, she brought a beautiful, feminine elegance to the brand. The critique surrounding her work wasn't that it lacked beauty, but rather that it was perhaps too loyal—too tethered to the archival safety of the original designs.
The Chanel Matthieu Blazy is bringing to the table is new, playful, and frankly, hyper-fixated on catering to a new generation. He isn't just making clothes; he’s making "must-haves" that feel vital. This level of adoration for a designer’s vision is something we haven’t witnessed in years.
As a stylist assistant at Neiman Marcus, I can truly attest to the insanity surrounding every drop. The energy in the store is electric and, at times, pure chaos. The shoes never even hit the sales floor—they are spoken for before the boxes are even unsealed—and the ready-to-wear items are scarce beyond belief. We are living in an era of "blink and you miss it" luxury.
Matthieu Blazy also recently selected two male ambassadors, A$AP Rocky and Pedro Pascal. What this signals for the future of the house is still unclear, but here at BOND, we’re hoping it points toward a Chanel menswear line arriving sooner rather than later.
In the world of high fashion, this level of excitement is refreshing. It feels like a genuine new wave of love for luxury from a younger, hungrier demographic of shoppers. Blazy is doing the impossible: styling loyalists who have worn the double-C for decades, while simultaneously capturing the hearts of the Gen-Z collectors who want something that feels disruptive. It isn’t just a brand revival; it’s a cultural shift.
